C. WAUMANS (*1619) after JONSON VAN CEULEN (*1593), Portrait of Adrian van Nieulant, Copper engravin Coenraet Waumans (born 1619 ) after Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen (before 1593 - 1661 ): Portrait by the Antwerp painter Adrian van Nieulant from *Het Gulden Cabinet*, 17th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Impression Quality: A good impression with rich blacks; the lines are clearly defined, with slight grey haze in the hatched areas of the background. Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Car. Ianssens pinxit. C. Waumans sculpsit. I. Meyssens excudit.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "ADRIAN VAN NIEULANT". Date: 17th century Description: A portrait of the painter Adrian van Nieulant, depicted in a three-quarter view after the left. The elderly man is wearing a loose-fitting cloak with a wide white turn-down collar, a small dark cap on the back of his head, and a moustache and goatee. His hands are clasped in front of his body, and his gaze is directed slightly to the side. The background is rendered using delicate cross-hatching, suggesting the back of a chair on the right. The image is framed within a rectangular plate mark; below it is a multi-line French inscription containing the number, name and biographical details, as well as the engraver’s and publisher’s marks. This work is thought to originate from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
