(around 1604 Antwerp - after 1674 England) after M Ferdinand (16./17. century): Portrait of the Antwerp copperplate engraver Petrus de Iode, with a biographical inscription, 17th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Impression Quality: A good to very good impression, deep black and clearly defined, with precise and sharp lines and well-defined hatching. Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "M. Ferdinand pinxit | P de Iode Iunior sculpsit. | Io. Meyssens excudit.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "PETRUS DE IODE". Date: 17th century Description: Portrait of Petrus de Iode, depicted as a half-figure in a three-quarter view after the left. The bearded, middle-aged man wears a white turn-down collar over a dark, buttoned doublet. He is holding a folded piece of paper or document in his hands. The face is carefully modelled, the gaze calm and direct. The background is kept uniformly dark through delicate cross-hatching, which effectively highlights the brightly lit facial features. The modelling is achieved through dense, parallel and criss-crossed lines; the flesh tones are lightened by delicate lines. Below the portrait is a multi-line inscription in French containing biographical details as well as information about the painter, engraver and publisher. This work is thought to have originally come from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
