An old attribution in pencil on the cover of the passe-partout ascribes the portrait to the Spanish Renaissance artist Juan Fernandez NAVARRETE (Logronyo 1526 - Toledo 1579): "JUAN FERNANDEZ NAVARRETE EL MUDO PINT -". Inscribed at the lower edge of the passepartout inside with: SOTHEBY-Co DRAWINGS. C. R. RUDOLF.
