The painting, executed in oil on canvas, is dated to around 1700. The size of the painting suggests that it was an altarpiece in a Catholic church in Italy. The perspective from slightly below heightens the drama of the dying Saviour. The objects at the foot of the cross are beautiful here, forming a kind of sacred still life.
