DREWES (1899-1985), Landscape along Catskill Creek, 1944, Chalk Werner Drewes (1899 Canig (Lower Lusatia) - 1985 Reston (Virginia)): Landscape at Catskill Creek, USA, 1944, Chalk Technique: Chalk on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed: "Drewes". Verso inscribed by the artist's hand: "So schön ist es dicht bei unserer Farm am Catskill Creek". Lower right dated: "44". Date: 1944 Description: Wonderfully moving and expressive sketch of the landscape at Catskill Creek, where the artist owned a small farm. The picturesque landscape along the small river and its surroundings often served Drewes as motifs for his works. Werner Drewes studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the 1920s under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger and László Moholy-Nagy, among others. He travelled in Europe, North America and Asia. Drewes left Germany in 1930 and went to New York City, where he taught at Columbia University, among other places. From 1946, he was a professor of design at Washington University in St. Louis and became friends with Max Beckmann.
