T. WEBER (1813-1875), Study sketch featuring sailing boats, Rome, Pencil Therese Weber (1813 Nymphenburg - 1875 Munich): Study sheet with sailing boats, architecture and small details, probably Rome or Italy, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Date: 19th century Description: Study sheet filled on both sides from the artist's sketchbook with motifs from architecture and shipping as well as studies of nature and details. Probably created while travelling in Italy. The recto is reminiscent of the architecture of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. Therese Weber owed her training as an artist to some of the most renowned artists of her time, Karl Rottmann, Christian Morgenstern and Albrecht Adam, to the encouragement of her uncle General Freiherr von Weber. After the death of her father, he took Therese in and recognised the girl's talent and inclination. The artist trained in landscape and animal painting and studied modern languages, history and literature. She sketched and painted nature on numerous trips to Alsace, Lorraine and the Bavarian Inn Valley. During a trip to Lake Tegernsee, she met the botanist August Max Einsele, who inspired her to make accurate drawings of the plant world and to create a picturesque herbarium. Therese Weber excelled as a plant painter and published several collected works on local flora, especially of the Alpine countries. She also used the studies herself to decorate fans. In later life, the artist also travelled frequently, accompanied by an adopted orphan. She travelled to Italy, France and Switzerland and took part in social life. At the age of 62, she succumbed to diphtheria and died on 30 December 1875. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Cities, Italy, Rome (Latium), Size: Paper: 24,2 cm x 31,5 cm (9,5 x 12,4 in) Condition: Rather good condition. The paper is clearly soiled on all sides. Soiled and somewhat worn along the edges. Partially untrimmed edges. Full-page horizontal crease in the lower third of the sheet. Paper strip attached to the left full-page (probably from the binding of the sketchbook)
