SAVIGNY (1831-1905), Geroldsau Waterfall, 1854, Pencil Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905 ): Geroldsau waterfall in the Black Forest, 1854, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Inscribed and dated in ink on the left: "Geroldsau d. 8 Sept. 1854" Date: 1854 Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905) is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Centre Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814-1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. The artist succeeds impressively in setting the scene for the small waterfall near Geroldsau through the mutual convergence of dark areas, opposing hatching and targeted light accents. It cascades down foaming between the rocks and pours into a small pool, which is clearly recognisable as a smooth water surface in the foreground. The sheet is discoloured due to its age and has pale foxing in places.
