SAVIGNY (1831-1905), Hornberg Castle in the Black Forest, 1856, Pencil Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905 ): Hornberg Castle perched on a rock in the Black Forest, 1856, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: inscribed and dated lower left: "Hornberg 56" Date: 1856 Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905) is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Centre Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814-1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. The frog's-eye view appears in several of Marie von Savigny's drawings and is used by her in particular for the monumental exaggeration of rock massifs or old fortifications. The ruins of Hornberg Castle near Hornberg shown here, with its preserved keep, tower above a steep rock massif. The silhouette stands out impressively against the bright sky. The drawing has been heightened on all sides with a light-coloured veil, creating the effect of glistening sunlight on a summer's day. A new building can be seen to the left of the old walls, which is presumably a building belonging to the brewery that acquired and utilised the site in 1841. The sheet is discoloured and slightly foxed due to its age.
