Nantes Inscription: At the top left is a blindstamp "Mr Pottin Nantes [...]" Date: 19th century Description: Successful landscape painting with a view from an elevated plain into a deep river valley in the alpine mountains. A small farmstead with a striking wayside cross can be seen on the artist's stand. Perspective depth is achieved by skilfully bluing and blurring the contours. The artist's monogram is scratched in at the bottom left. The painting shows a picturesque mountain landscape with a small village nestling in the rolling hills. Lush vegetation and a path leading into the village can be seen in the foreground. At the edge of the path is a wooden crucifix, which serves as a religious symbol. The houses in the village are built from light-coloured materials and have flat roofs. In the background, majestic mountains, partly shrouded in clouds, dominate the scenery. The depth of the space is emphasised by the winding course of a river that meanders through the valley. The lighting conditions indicate a clear, sunny time of day that makes the colours of the landscape glow.
