Munich. 20th century, 19th century Inscription: labelled lower right: "Sketch by ADoll" Date: c. 1860 Description: In the necrology for Anton Doll, who died in 1887 and whose friends published it in 1888, quoted by Max Gruber, they describe not only Doll's fondness for the Munich architectural motifs for which the painter was known, but also his tendency "to stroll abroad [with his drawing portfolio, where] he also liked to get 'village parts' and mills". Doll travelled through the northern and southern Alpine countries with a keen eye for memorable, sometimes unspoilt scenes. This watercolour also comes from such forays. It shows a lonely wooden hut standing in a forest landscape next to a pond. The small shelter is tucked under the foliage of two trees and appears to have served as a shed for a forest worker or forester. Provenance: F. The sheet is clearly discoloured and light-stained due to its age. Brown discolouration is visible along the lateral edges. Along the right edge of the sheet, the paper is clearly damaged by marginal tears and creases. The corners of the sheet are damaged. The upper edge is crookedly trimmed.
