The upper section incorporates a large rectangular viewing opening and a lateral focusing or adjustment knob. The compact vertical design suggests use as an optical viewing and drawing aid, projecting the image formed by the lens onto an internal viewing surface. The combination of polished brass and blackened metal is typical of scientific and optical instruments of the period. A very decorative and unusual example of a 19th-century optical instrument. With original leather case.
