Provenienz Norddeutsche Privatsammlung, bis 1963. - Lempertz, Köln, 14.-16.11.1963, Lot 126. - Dort vom Vater des jetzigen Eigentümers erworben. Isack van Ostade, der jüngere Bruder und Schüler Adriaen van Ostades, trat 1643 der Haarlemer Lukasgilde bei. Sein Œuvre umfasst vornehmlich ländliche Szenen mit Reisenden und Bauern vor Wirtshäusern und Bauernhöfen, belebte Landstraßen sowie Winterlandschaften mit Schlitten und Staffagefiguren. Mit feiner Beobachtungsgabe schildert Isack van Ostade das alltägliche Leben der holländischen Landbevölkerung und verbindet die lebendige Staffage mit atmosphärisch reizvollen Landschaftsdarstellungen. Zu den charakteristischen Motiven seines Schaffens zählt der Schimmel, der auch im vorliegenden, signierten Gemälde prominent erscheint.
