Diese Jahre gelten als seine kreativste Schaffensperiode, in der er unter anderem seine berühmten Entenbilder entwickelte. So auch das vorliegende Werk, welches laut Werkverzeichnis (Nr. 624) in die Zeit bis etwa 1905 eingeordnet wird.
