SCHRÖDEL, CARL DAVID Dresden Title: Oval Silver Serving Platter with Side Handles from a service of Elector Friedrich August III. Date: 1772. Designer: From the so-calles 'Silberservice mit FA im Schilde'. Material: Silver, weight ca. 2720g. Measurement: 55 x 35cm, height 4.5 cm. Seal: Inspection mark Dresden (Rosenberg no. 1671), year letter y for 1772, assayer's mark, maker's mark Carl David Schrödel (maker ca. 1743, from 1762 on court jeweller, ibid. no. 1808). Description: Oval shape with slightly scalloped rim. The side handles rolled into a small volute and decorated with large laurel leaves. On the underside the monogram "FA im Schilde unter Kurhut" with inventory number 2 and weight details "11 Mr. 12 lt. 3p engraved This particular ‘Présentoir’ is listed on page 402 of the ‘Chur-fürstl.-Sächßl. Silber-Kammer-Inventarium, Volume 1’ dated 1789. A total of four are listed in this inventory, directly below the four tureens for which they were intended. The display stand forms part of the so-called ‘silver service with FA on the shield’, commissioned for Frederick Augustus III of Saxony (1750–1827). It was commissioned in 1772 and expanded on several occasions during the rest of the 18th century. Its creation is linked to the aftermath of the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), during which large parts of the Saxon silver collection had been melted down. New commissions were prepared from 1765 onwards and received a further boost following the marriage of Friedrich August III to Amalie Auguste of Palatinate-Zweibrücken in 1769. Carl David Schrödel (1712–1773) was entrusted with the execution of the work; following his death, his widow and his twin sons, Carl Christian and Friedrich Christian Schrödel (both 1745–1810), continued the work for the Dresden court. In the Saxon court silver inventory, the service is listed as ‘A silver service marked with FA on the shield’. The service was presumably divided up in 1918 as part of the settlement of the House of Wettin’s claims. Today, bowls and lids from the service are housed in the Green Vault in Dresden. Items of cutlery from the service were also offered for sale and auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on 17 December 1999 as part of the so-called Moritzburg Treasure.
