ZÜND, ROBERT 1827 Lucerne–1909 Lucerne Title: Shore Scenery at Lake Lucerne near Meggen. Date: 1859. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 36 x 51cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower left: Robert Zünd 1859. Reverse: On the stretcher old number label. Frame: Framed. The present painting is registered at the Swiss Institute for Art Research, Zurich, under no. 82835. As 'ideale Reallandschaft oder reale Ideallandschaft' ('ideal real landscape or real ideal landscape') the swiss author Gottfried Keller described one work of his countryman Robert Zünd in 1882. This description also suits the present atmospheric landscape that shows the waterfront of the Lake Lucerne in summer. Across the barren, grassy shore with a rock at the height of the observer's stance, the viewer's eye is guided along the edges of the shore into the depth. On the right the calm water surface, on the left the land with a high group of trees in the middle ground. This is the beginning of the shore's forestation that draws wide into the image's depth. The serene scenery is vivified by a herd of cows and goats with a sheperdess on the riverside path. A young white goat leans playfully its front legs on a low fence and looks out onto the lake. There it sees a fisherman, rather in the foreground, at the right margin who lets his feet dangle casually over the boat's edge while holding his fishing rod. This in 1859 signed and dated painting is absolutely characteristic for Robert Zünd's work who is one of the most popular 19th century artists in Switzerland to this day. Grown up in a bourgeois family in Lucerne, Robert Zünd could develop his artistic talent under the instruction of regional teachers at first. At the age of 21, the young painter went to Geneva where he could initially learn from François Diday and later from Diday's student Alexandre Calame who already was one of the leading European landscape painters of late Romanticism at that point. On journeys to Paris, Munich and Dresden Robert Zünd studied and copied old masters at the local museums and eductaed himself further. At this time, he got to know his countryman of the same age, Rudolf Koller, with whom he would establish a life-long friendship and artistic exchange. Unlike his teacher Calame, Robert Zünd was not interested in the heroically excessive alpine high-mountain landscape; he found his idyllic motifs bathed in light in the surroundings of his hometown Lucerne. Drawings and oil studies that he worked on in nature were composed by the artist as ideal landscapes at his studio and were highly sought after by the Swiss bourgeois class. Robert Zünd was a loner, both as human and as an artist, who worked for creating a special exhibition of Swiss landscape painting outside the artistic movements of his time. At his old age, Robert Zünd who had never been art of any academic institution received an honorary doctorate of the University of Zurich. Today his works can be found in significant public and private art collections. Provenance: - Private ownership, Germany.
