Gerhard Altenbourg. Janda 59/3 31,3 : 22,2 cm. 27, [1] Seiten. - Rücken verblasst. english description: Contains 16 watercolor and ink drawings, 2 of which are full-page and monogrammed, and twelve pasted-in photographs. Original cloth binding with mould-made paper covers. One of 50 copies. - Signed, dated, and numbered by the artist in the colophon, and bearing the artist’s embossed stamp. - On mould-made paper. - The presentation within this small edition varied considerably and, in most cases, went beyond simply announcing the title; the majority of the additional drawings can be understood as artistic complements to the typography designed by Altenbourg. The two studio photographs, which complement the ten photos of his own works, are at least mentioned on the half-title. - Both covers feature a sheet of mould-made paper with a three-part letterpress print of the artist’s anagram, decorated with ink brushwork. - Includes the introduction »Über Bilder von Gerhard Altenbourg« (“On Images by Gerhard Altenbourg”). - Altenbourg (1926-1989) was considered an exceptional figure in the now-defunct GDR art scene. Until the 1980s, he faced obstacles there in exhibiting and publishing his works; it was not until his 60th birthday that major exhibitions took place and the “Wund-Denkmale” were published by Sisyphos-Presse in Leipzig (see Lot 300). - Very rare; one of the artist’s earliest publications and, in the truest sense of the word, a “painter’s book.” Back faded.
