Als Anreiz lud Vollard Chagall in seine Loge im Cirque d’Hiver ein. Ausgehend von den damals entstandenen Gouachen und inspiriert durch weitere Zirkusbesuche begann Chagall 1962 mit der Arbeit an der vorliegenden Serie und schuf 23 Farb- und 15 Schwarz-Weiß-Lithographien, zu denen er selbst den Begleittext schrieb, in dem er resümiert «A travers les siècles, c'est le cri le plus aigu dans la recherche de l'amusement et de la joie de l'homme». - Tériade animierte verschiedene andere Künstler zu Illustrationen des Zirkus-Themas: Rouault (1943), Matisse (1947), Léger (1950) und schließlich Chagall. - Die schiere Begeisterung für das Metier, die von diesen Bildern ausgeht, die Freude und ihr lebensbejahender Geist stehen in scharfem Kontrast zu den düsteren Clowns und Zirkusdamen von Georges Rouault. As an incentive, he offered the artist the use of his own box at the Cirque d’Hiver in Paris during visits. Building on the early gouaches commissioned by Vollard, Chagall began work on this series in 1962 and created 23 color and 15 black-and-white lithographs, for which he wrote an accompanying text. Chagall was fascinated by color lithography as a medium of printmaking, as it offered him nearly unlimited painterly freedom. Upon completion, the book also became known as the “Cirque Vollard” series. The sheer enthusiasm for the craft that radiates from these images, along with their joy and life-affirming spirit, stand in sharp contrast to the gloomy clowns and circus ladies of Georges Rouault, who also created circus-themed illustrations for Vollard. slipcase and chemise cover have slight foxing. - Outer edges and trim with a few small spots of foxing.
