Fritz Levedag. Vatokruzi. - In einem Kulissenrahmen, wohl vom Künstler. english description: Oil on wood panel. Circa 1940. Signed or inscribed on the reverse. Fritz Levedag studied at the Dessau Bauhaus under Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. In 1929, he followed Walter Gropius to Berlin and worked as an architect in Gropius’s office. He became a freelance painter in Berlin and held his first exhibition at the »Sturm«; he consistently pursued his path toward abstract painting and developed an independent, complex theory of color and form. “Over the course of his career, he moved toward increasingly intense studies of form and color, which reduced objects to their basic forms or geometric shapes such as lines, angles, circles, or polygons.” (trans. from Stadtmuseum Münster, online). - On the reverse, barely legibly inscribed in red pencil: “NR 1161 || LEVEDAG || Oil/P. 29.5 : 17 || VATOKRUZ / 41.” Also bears the artist’s stamp, a dedication or ownership notation reading “Klein,” “No. 5 / 1. Stück,” and a sticker with instructions for an illustration. - Set in a backdrop frame, likely by the artist.
