Date: 19th century Description: The German-Austrian lithographer and publisher Adolph Friedrich Kunike (1777 Greifswald - 1838 Vienna) opened his own lithographic institute in Vienna in 1817, which soon became a leading address for the publication of landscape and portrait lithographs. Between 1820 and 1826 Kunike published several series of works entitled "Zwey hundert vier und sechzig Donau-Ansichten nach dem Verlauf des Donaustromes von seinem Ursprung bis zu seinem Ausflusse in das Schwarze Meer" (Two Hundred Four and Sixty Views of the Danube Following the Course of the Danube River from its Source to its Outflow into the Black Sea), depicting a wide variety of landscapes. On a narrow winding section of the Danube or one of its tributaries in the area of present-day Hungary or Slovakia, the contemplative scenery of this small village with a simple village church and a few low houses and huts is shown. The rocky hills along the river valley, overgrown with groups of trees, radiate the effect of shelter and security. In the foreground of the idyllic landscape, a few figures are shown, giving the picture a romantic appeal. On the left a young couple is walking along the river and on the right a man is resting under a tree while a young woman with a boy visits him. The sheet is discoloured due to its age and shows clear foxing. Light damage in the form of former framing is visible around the image. The remains of wide adhesive strips can be seen along the upper and lower edges of the sheet. The image makes a good impression.
