J. TRIBELHORN (18th), Portrait of C. W. Hufeland (1762–1836), Lithography Johannes Tribelhorn (18th century): Portrait of C W Hufeland (1762-1836), 19th century, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: Signed by the artist in the lower centre of the stone: "Lith. J. Tribelhorn in St. Gallen", inscribed below with "C. W. Hufeland | Königl. Preuss. Staatsrathe, Leibarzte und Professor der Universität Berlin". Date: 19th century Description: Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland (1762 Langensalza - 1836 Berlin), who came from a distinguished family of physicians, completed his own medical studies in Göttingen and Jena before receiving his doctorate in 1783. As a physician of excellent reputation, he counted some German celebrities of the 18th century among his patients, among whom Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller stand out in particular. As professor of medicine in Jena and later in Berlin, he was appointed royal personal physician to Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1801. As a medical theorist, he made a name for himself above all through the vital force theory he developed and the founding of macrobiotics. The portrait shows Hufeland in a half-profile portrait of advanced age. Around his neck he wears an inconspicuous award, which testifies to the medical merits of his life. Person: Depicted: Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland (1762 Langensalza - 1836 Berlin) German physician, royal personal physician, social hygienist as well as clinical teacher and "people's educator". He is called a representative of vitalism (a concept diametrically opposed to the then fashionable Brownianism) because of his life force theory. He is also seen as the founder of macrobiotics. Keywords: Medicine, , Doctor, Researcher, Science, 19th century, Romanticism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 20,6 cm x 12,8 cm (8,1 x 5 in), Depiction: 9,5 cm x 8,5 cm (3,7 x 3,3 in) Condition: Very good condition. Slightly foxed. Occasional minor soiling and rubbing of the paper surface. A fold of the paper due to printing can be seen in the centre. There are minimal bump marks along the edges. There is a faint crease along the right edge of the sheet.
