Date: 19th century Description: The picture shows an allegorical depiction of two mythological figures symbolising the river Rhône and the Mediterranean. Both figures are depicted half-naked and in a relaxed posture. The sturdy man with a beard is leaning on a large vessel from which water is flowing, while the woman leans against him and is wrapped in a cloth. The composition is balanced, with a harmonious connection between the figures and the natural surroundings. Trees and a wide expanse of water can be seen in the background, creating a tranquil, almost idyllic scene. The lighting conditions are even, without strong contrasts, which lends the depiction a gentle atmosphere.
