This Portrait is humbly dedicated by their most & grateful humble Serv.". Date: 19th century Description: Half-length portrait to the right in three-quarter view, looking forwards. The clergyman is wearing a dark robe with a white beret, his slightly wavy hair is combed back. The dark background draws attention to the expressive face. The Rev. James Britton was a respected schoolmaster and parish priest in Yorkshire. The depiction emphasises his dignified appearance and the intellectual authority of an Anglican clergyman of the time.
