R. VINKELES (1741-1816), Doctors at the patient’s bedside, 1767, Etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741 Amsterdam - 1816 ibid.): The doctors at the patient’s bedside Fable XCIV: Two doctors at a patient’s bedside, 1767, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: Drawing clear lines with a beautiful, deep black tone. Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "Vinkeles, del. et sculp.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "LES MEDECINS. Fable XCIV.". Date: 1767 Description: A hospital room is depicted as a stage-like interior scene. On the right, a man lies on a four-poster bed, his head propped up on pillows, his gaze fixed on two visitors. On the left, a bearded man wearing a wide-brimmed hat stands at the foot of the bed; in the centre, a second male figure gestures with a raised hand, as if speaking or making a diagnosis. A small table with a bowl and a cup suggests nursing care or medicine. Delicate hatching gives form to robes, bed curtains and wall surfaces; dense cross-hatching darkens the background. The figures are clearly arranged in a staggered formation in front of the bed, whose diagonal line directs the viewer’s gaze towards the patient.
