VINKELES (1741-1816), Belphegor, Panel 4, 1781, Etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741 Amsterdam - 1816 ibid.): Belphegor, Plate 4 Belphegor Fable CCXLIV Plate 4, featuring a dramatic scene with multiple figures, 1781, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: An absolutely superb, balanced print with crisp lines and good black density. Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "Vinkeles, del. et sculp.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "BELPHEGOR. Fable CCXLIV. 4e Planche.". Date: 1781 Description: A scene featuring numerous figures unfolds in front of a column and a draped canopy. At the centre, a crowned man in antique-style robes stands on a step, pointing to the left with his arm outstretched. In front of him, a bearded man in light clothing is kneeling or staggering; on the right, women are supporting a figure slumped on the ground. On the left, armed men wearing helmets and carrying lances and standards are surging forward. The space is organised in tiers comprising steps, architectural elements and clusters of figures. Delicate parallel hatching and dense cross-hatching render the robes, faces and areas of shadow. Light-coloured open spaces accentuate the main group. The gestures emphasise authority, submission and the triggering of dramatic emotion within a narrative historical composition.
