At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Sand-beck, in Yorkshire, the Seat of the Earl of Scarborough. Published as the Act directs, Augt. 1. 1779, by W. Watts, Kempt's Row, Chelsea.". Date: 1779 Description: View of a representative country estate with a three-storey, classicising main building on the left, whose central risalits are emphasised by triangular gables and column porticos. The building stands on a rusticated plinth; steps lead up to the entrance. On the right, a park landscape opens up with a group of trees, riverside path, small bridge and a body of water on which a sailing boat appears. A few tiny figures animate the middle ground and stagger the depth of the space. Dense hatching models the architecture, foliage and cloudy sky; horizontal lines calm the sky. The composition directs the viewer's gaze from the house across the path to the water and into the distant hilly landscape.
