Jacques GAMELIN was a French painter, draughtsman, engraver and etcher of early classicism. Gamelin first studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Toulouse under Jean-Pierre Rivalz. His artistic training continued in Paris and Rome, where he worked as a professor at the Accademia di San Luca from 1771. One year later, Pope Clement XIV appointed him court painter. Gamelin also met the painter Anton Raphael Mengs in Rome. The sheet has discoloured in keeping with its age and bears dirt and foxing stains, particularly in the margins. The corners damaged by bumps and creases. Lower right with a liquid stain and several horizontal creases in the centre of the sheet margin.
