W. WATTS (*1752) after DEVIS (*1762), Appuldurcombe Park, Isle of Wight, 1780, Etching William Watts (1752 - 1851 ) after Arthur William Devis (1762 London - 1822 ibid.): Appuldurcombe Park Appuldurcombe Park on the Isle of Wight with manor house, carriage and deer, 1780, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: Quite an excellent, harmonious impression, with delicate and clear drawing. Minimally rubbed in places. Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "A. Devis del. / W. Watts sculp.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "A. Dureis del. / Appuldurcombe Park, in the Isle of Wight, the Seat of Sir Richard Worsley Bart. / Published as the Act directs, Jan.y 1.st 1780, by W Watts, Hampstead near Chesham. / W. Walker sculp.". Date: 1780 Description: A wide park landscape with a stately country house in the middle ground, accessed by a curved driveway. A carriage with a carriage and rider enliven the open lawn; several deer rest and graze in the foreground. Tall trees frame the scene at the sides like a backdrop and stagger the view down to the hills and water on the horizon. The print works with delicate lines, dense hatching and graduated tonal values for modelling foliage, clouds and terrain. The composition combines topographical accuracy with an idealized park idyll and refers to aristocratic representation and tamed nature.
