CARSTENS (1762-1798), Traditional and modern costumes, Etching Friedrich Christian Carstens (1762 - 1798 ): Old and new costume, toga and councillor, 18th century, Etching Technique: Etching and Aquatint on Paper, mounted on Paper Inscription: Inscribed in pencil al below on the backing sheet: "alte und neue Kleidertracht von Fried. Christ. Carstens". Date: 18th century Description: On four separate sheets are etchings or aquatint etchings with full-figure depictions of four persons. At the top is a gentleman in the toga of a Roman senator and a woman in ancient costume with a wrinkled robe. Below is a sturdy man in the dark garb of an 18th century North German merchant or councillor with a ruff and hat. Next to him is the pious wife in a bourgeois dress with a rosary. The paper is slightly discoloured due to its age. Slightly creased at the corners and slightly wavy due to mounting with liquid glue. The illustration makes a very good impression in each case.
