Wolters". Date: c. 1930 Description: The oil painting shows a powerfully modelled self-portrait of the artist Paul Schroeter in bust view. The composition is characterised by energetic brushwork and impasto application of paint, with warm ochre tones in the face contrasting with the dark background. The light is focussed on the forehead, nose and cheek, making the face stand out vividly, while the shadow areas appear deep and dense. The serious, slightly closed expression, the raised brows and the tense lips lend the portrait psychological depth. Schroeter presents himself here as a reflective, serious artist, whereby his style shows impressionistic influences, particularly in the treatment of colour and light.
