Date: 1954 Description: Impressionistic view across St Peter's Square in Rome to the east façade of St Peter's Basilica, designed by Carlo Maderno, and the mighty dome planned by Michelangelo Buonarotti. The buildings of the Vatican and the papal palace can be seen to the side. The large ancient obelisk, which was brought here from Nero's circus in 1585, towers in the centre. The artistic colour gradients in strong tones are typical of the artist, who mainly studied landscapes and architecture in Italy and captured them in watercolour.
