E. STEPPES (1873-1968), A study of the forest columbine, 1914, Pen drawing Edmund Steppes (1873 Burghausen - 1968 Deggendorf): Plant study on columbine Fine botanical ink drawing of columbine flowers and leaves, 1914, Pen drawing Technique: Pen drawing on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed: "Ed. St.". Lower right dated: "1914". Date: 1914 Description: This elegant pen and ink drawing shows several flowers and leaves of aquilegia, a delicate-looking perennial with a characteristic flower shape. Three flowers in different stages of development - bud, half open and fully unfolded - are loosely distributed on the sheet, accompanied by finely worked leaves with a typical lobed structure. The drawing thrives on the contrast between clear lines and delicate hatching, modelling volume and structure. The reduced composition on light-coloured paper emphasises the botanical details. The signature at the bottom right with the date "1914" places the work in the context of the artisan-oriented art of drawing of the early 20th century, possibly in the context of Art Nouveau or naturalistic depictions of plants. Provenance: From the estate of the artist. Keywords: Nature, 20th century, Modern, Botany, Germany, Size: Paper: 22,5 cm x 15,3 cm (8,9 x 6 in) Condition: Very good condition. The sheet is slightly discoloured due to age. Brownish discolouration in the upper corners. There are faint creases along the right edge of the sheet. The lower right corner of the sheet minimally creased.
