M. GEWIN (1900-1976), Urban façades with a bridge, 1919, Pencil Marinus Ursul Maria Gewin (1900 Obermenzing near Munich - 1976 Obermenzing): Abstract depiction of urban façades with an implied bridge and geometric lines, 1919, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Dated lower left: "Okt 1919", signed lower right: "M. U. M. Gewin". Date: 1919 Description: Son of the Dutch architect Johann Christoph Gewin (born 1869). Born on 27 August 1900 in Obermenzing near Munich, M. U. M. Gewin spent his childhood in Germany. The Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Frankfurt, lists addresses in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Munich and Darmstadt. The artistic works presented here date from 1918 onwards, mainly from 1919 to 1921. They take up architectural ideas, clearly also received from de Stijl during a trip to Holland around 1920. He went on to study architecture in Darmstadt; the date of his main diploma examination is given as 25 May 1925. His profession was accompanied by freelance artistic work, presented to the wider public in an illustrated book, published in 1933 with the playful title of a journey to the East: "Ostermanns fahren nach Moskau" (Ostermann's journey to Moscow), published by Boltze, Karlsruhe. Numerous encounters with Gewin's works can be recorded for the post-war period, above all ink drawings and watercolours from Spain, France and North America. An exhibition at the Akzisehaus Osnabrück in 1975 provided an insight into his late work, with a catalogue: MUM Gewin, Watercolours and Drawings from the South of France. The works from the estate presented here are to be contrasted with the departure towards a new and decorative art of the period around 1920. Keywords: City; architecture; buildings; windows; street view; perspective; lines; geometry; bridge; urban; facade; abstract; light and shadow; grey values; concentration; quietness; minimalism; depth of space Size: Paper: 31,1 cm x 23,8 cm (12,2 x 9,4 in) Condition: Very good condition. The paper shows slight age-related yellowing. The drawing is in good overall condition, no visible tears or stains. The lines are clear and without smudges. There is a signature at the lower edge of the image, which is completely preserved.
