Date: 19th century Description: Inspired by his father Georg (1873-1959), who had already collected a basic stock of drawings and engravings, mostly of religious content, Dr Wilhelm Denzel began to collect them himself in the 1920s. He had a particular passion for landscape illustrations from the Munich School and humorous drawings, primarily caricatures from around 1900 from the "Simplicissimus", "Jugend" and "Fliegende Blätter" magazines. Denzel did not focus primarily on the well-known names when acquiring the sheets; unusual motifs and the quality of the drawings were always more important to him. This resulted in a thematically extremely diverse collection of around three thousand drawings with a focus on southern Germany, in which there are many interesting and never-before-seen things to discover, even in the classic genres such as landscape and genre - a cross-section of the multifaceted oeuvre over the course of a century, from around 1830 to 1930.
