E. BRETENIÈRES (*1804), Aigle Castle in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, 1855, Pencil Edmond de Bretenières (1804 Dijon - 1882 ibid.): Aigle Castle in the canton of Vaud, "Château d'Aigle", journey to Switzerland, sketchbook, 1855, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper, mounted on Paper Date: 1855 Description: From a scrapbook with travel sketches by the artist. "Esquisses faites par le Baron Edmond de Bretenières feudant les voyages en Suisse" (Sketches made by Baron Edmond de Bretenieres during his travels in Switzerland). **** The drawing shows a detailed view of a castle with several towers surrounded by trees. The castle complex with its pointed roofs rises in the foreground, while the silhouette of mountains is indicated in the background. A church with a tall bell tower can be seen on the right of the picture, complementing the village. The composition uses fine lines to emphasise the architecture and the natural surroundings. The sky remains empty, which draws the focus to the buildings. The lines are precise, creating a sense of calm and permanence. The scenery appears harmonious and balanced, with nature in a quiet dialogue with the architecture.
