E. BRETENIÈRES (*1804), Waterfall near Meiringen, 1835, Pencil Edmond de Bretenières (1804 Dijon - 1882 ibid.): Waterfall near Meiringen in the Reichenbach Valley, Journey to Switzerland, Sketchbook, 1835, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: inscribed and dated in pencil lower left Date: 1835 Description: Idyllic river course with waterfall in the Reichenbach valley. From a scrapbook with travel sketches by the artist. "Esquisses faites par le Baron Edmond de Bretenières feudant les voyages en Suisse" (Sketches made by Baron Edmond de Bretenieres during his travels in Switzerland). | Watermark: Coat of arms and "RIVES" The drawing shows a detailed landscape sketch with rocks, trees and a waterfall. Large, irregular rock formations are sketched in the foreground, giving the impression of a natural barrier. In between, there is flowing water that ends in a small pool. The trees are drawn with delicate lines, their leaves and branches creating a lively texture. The composition leads the eye from the lower rocks over the waterfall to the treetops in the background. The light conditions are not represented by shading, but by the density of the lines. The drawing dispenses with figures and concentrates entirely on the natural surroundings.
