A wooden bridge crosses the river, on which a lady with a child is standing. From a scrapbook of the artist's travel sketches. In the foreground, massive rocks and a striking coniferous tree can be seen, modelled with precise hatching. The composition leads the eye from the large rocks and the tree in the foreground to the delicate bridge, on which a small figure can be recognised. The spatial depth is created by the superimposition of trees and the staggered arrangement of the elements. The lighting conditions are subtle, indicated mainly by shading, which lends the scene a calm and tranquil atmosphere. The drawing is in a finely lined style that emphasises the natural texture of the landscape.
