Amand Durand after Rembrandt, Jan Cornelisz. Sylvius, photogravure with Durand stamp Photogravure on paper with the Michallet watermark after Rembrandt, mounted on a support sheet, with the red stamp of Amand Durand verso (Lugt 2934). The preacher sits at half length in an oval format, a book in his left hand, the right raised in a gesture of speech. He wears a dark gown with a broad fur trim and a flat cap above the narrow face marked by beard and lines. The oval is framed by a Latin inscription, below the image stand two columns of Latin verses. Age-appropriate condition, browned, minimal damage in places. Image 18.5 x 16 cm (HxW), overall size 42.5 x 31 cm (HxW) Charles Amand-Durand (1831–1905) developed a photogravure process in the 1870s with which old etchings and engravings could be reproduced in almost indistinguishable quality. With it he published extensive series of facsimiles on behalf of the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris and the Louvre, among them the complete etched work of Rembrandt. Because the sheets are deceptively convincing, Amand-Durand marked them on the reverse with his monogram stamp, which Frits Lugt lists under number 2934 in his register of collectors' marks. The model for this sheet is Rembrandt's portrait of the Amsterdam preacher Jan Cornelisz. Sylvius of 1646, one of his best-known portrait etchings.
