William Hutton founded the business in Birmingham in 1800 and moved it to Sheffield in 1832; from about 1870 the company traded as William Hutton & Sons, from 1893 as Ltd., before it was merged into James Dixon & Sons in 1930. Besides sterling silver and Britannia metal the firm produced, using the licensed Elkington process, silver-plated tableware, table candlesticks, candle holders and cutlery; the mark “BP” probably denotes the nickel alloy “British Plate” developed by Hutton at the end of the 19th century as the base metal of the silver plating.
