In the lower elevations of the upland range beech forests shape the landscape, while above about 800 metres spruce predominates. Since 2006 the Harz National Park, which spans federal state borders, has protected some 247 square kilometres. Martin Wirth was at home on the northern edge of the Harz in Darlingerode (today part of Ilsenburg), and landscapes of the Harz recur several times in his watercolours.
