Dietrich Genau, Mill Race in Hoym with View towards the Castle, Anhalt Town View (1936 Osnabrueck to 2026), oil on canvas, signed lower left. View across the mill race in Hoym towards the castle, the water running shallow through the centre of the picture; on the left the masonry wall of a long barn with a fence behind it, in the centre a tree with a gnarled, pollarded trunk, on the right a house with a tiled roof, in the background a footbridge with a railing and further half-timbered buildings, above a blue sky with white clouds and yellow evening light towards the horizon, the foliage autumnal yellow. Good condition, slightly soiled. Image 40x30 cm (HxW). Framed, frame scuffed, frame width 8 cm Hoym Castle was built between 1714 and 1721 to designs by Johann Tobias Schuchardt on the remains of a moated castle, as a Baroque rendered building over a high basement with central projections and stucco ceilings; from 1836 to 1863 Wilhelm von Kuegelgen served here as chamberlain and wrote his memoirs. The rivers Selke and Getel run through the town, and three watermills once worked on them; their races still shape the townscape today. Dietrich Genau worked in pencil, watercolour and oil and was awarded the cultural prize of the Salzlandkreis in 2020.
