The Czech graphic artist became known above all for etchings in drypoint and aquatint; he also produced chalk drawings, gouaches and non-representational paintings. His abstract work draws on the Baroque heritage and the poetics of Surrealism. In the 1990s he worked mainly with chalk on paper and reworked the sheets with gouache; around 2000 he divided sheets into a light and a dark half with light gouache colours. Kovář was a member of the Prague printmakers' association Hollar, a fellow of the Aldegrever-Gesellschaft in 1979 and from 1992 an honorary member of the Masaryk Academy of Arts in Prague; he exhibited in Freiburg, Prague and Las Palmas, among other places. Bekannt wurde der tschechische Grafiker vor allem mit Radierungen in Kaltnadel und Aquatinta, daneben entstanden Kreidezeichnungen, Gouachen und ungegenständliche Gemälde. Sein abstraktes Werk schöpft aus dem barocken Erbe und der Poetik des Surrealismus. In den 1990er Jahren arbeitete er überwiegend mit Kreide auf Papier und überarbeitete die Blätter mit Gouache; um 2000 teilte er Blätter mit hellen Gouachefarben in eine helle und eine dunkle Hälfte. Kovář war Mitglied der Prager Grafikervereinigung Hollar, 1979 Stipendiat der Aldegrever-Gesellschaft und ab 1992 Ehrenmitglied der Masaryk-Akademie der Künste in Prag; er stellte unter anderem in Freiburg, Prag und Las Palmas aus. Die Mischtechnik verbindet verschiedene Bindemittel und Farbmaterialien auf einem Bildträger.
