Prof. Helmut Sundhaussen, Geometric Composition on Yellow, Concrete Art from Duesseldorf, 1977 (1935 Duesseldorf - 2018 ibid.), oil on canvas, signed and dated (19)77 on the reverse of the support. Square composition: against a yellow ground a medium grey, a light grey and a black plane are staggered along two diagonals running from lower left to upper right; the yellow ground remains visible as a narrow border strip and as a triangle in the lower left corner. The paint applied smoothly and opaquely. Good condition, slightly rubbed in places. Image 61 x 61 cm (HxW), framed, frame minimally bumped, frame width 2 cm. After studying under Bruno Goller at the Duesseldorf Art Academy, Helmut Sundhaussen developed a pictorial language that works with a few basic geometric forms and plays plane, edge and colour value against one another. Characteristic is the interlocking of diagonally directed planes oscillating between flat colour field and spatial fold, a problem he varied over decades in square formats. Exhibitions took him to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn, the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum Krefeld and the Museu de Arte da Pampulha, among others; he lived and worked in Duesseldorf and Tokyo and was a member of the Westdeutscher Kuenstlerbund.
