Charles Bodvile Robartes, 2nd Earl of Radnor (1660 to 1723), sat in Parliament for Bossiney and Cornwall, was Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lord Warden of the Stannaries and Treasurer of the Chamber, and was an art collector and patron; Alexander Pope called him "a lavish curio". The model, a workshop picture by Dahl of circa 1700 to 1705 showing the sitter in the coronation robes of a peer with the coronet in his hand, hangs at Lanhydrock House in Cornwall (National Trust). As a copy after an Old Master, this aristocratic portrait preserves the type of the English Baroque portrait in which the peer is shown with robe and coronet as signs of his rank.
