Ship diorama with full-rigged ship "Bremen" under Imperial flag in glazed showcase with lighthouse Wood, metal, thread and painted cardboard, diorama with a finely detailed ship model of a German windjammer in a showcase with glass front and side viewing windows, wooden frame, the ship with the name "BREMEN" on the bow, fully rigged three-master (full-rigged ship) with set square sails and headsails, additionally a gaff sail on the mizzen mast, with hoisted black-white-red Imperial flag of the German Empire, modelled on a choppy sea with lighthouse staffage in the background, the interior painted in colours, rigging, railing, ship's boats and deck structures handmade, case exterior patterned in brown and gold, two hangers on top, good condition commensurate with age, 47x67x24 cm (HxWxD) A full-rigged ship is a sailing vessel with at least three masts, all carrying square sails, the aftermost mast additionally carrying a gaff sail; on the barque, by contrast, only the last mast is rigged with a gaff sail. In the 19th century the Hanseatic city of Bremen was one of the most important German seaports and the seat of large shipping companies such as Norddeutscher Lloyd. Windjammers, mostly three-masted sailing ships with steel hulls, served trade on overseas routes and represent the peak of large-scale sailing navigation circa 1900. By Bismarck's decision of December 1866 the colours black-white-red became the merchant flag of the North German Confederation and after 1871 remained the flag of the Reich until the end of the First World War. Dioramas with nautical motifs were made from this time on by sailors and model builders, as souvenirs of long voyages and as display objects.
