Münden, guild pipe of the painters, long pipe with porcelain bowl, circa 1930/1940 Porcelain, wood, horn and metal, guild pipe of the painters' trade (Weißbinder), long composite pipe by the pipe factory Otto Henze, Hann. Münden, stamped on the reservoir "Otto Henze" and "Hann: Münden" in a strap oval, brass-coloured hinged lid with eyelet, marked "OHM", porcelain bowl with gilt rim, painters' motto in Fraktur script all round a guild emblem with crossed brushes, spatula, bucket and other painters' tools, reservoir with gilt rims, long stem of lime wood wrapped with red-brown and black cord, two tassels, angled horn mouthpiece. Good condition commensurate with age, chip to the rim of the reservoir, decoration slightly rubbed, glaze crack in the bowl wall, wood with adhesive residue. L. 85 cm. Weißbinder, like Tüncher, is an older term for the painter; the name derives from the craftsman binding white pigments with binders himself to make paint. Guild pipes bear the emblem of their trade on the porcelain bowl, often together with a rhymed trade motto. Around 1930 the Otto Henze pipe factory in Hannoversch Münden offered long student pipes, meerschaum, walnut and briar pipes as well as pipes with porcelain and meerschaum bowls in its sample catalogue. Its guild pipes follow the construction of the composite pipe with a reservoir between bowl and stem to catch the condensate. German Description Otto Henze Hann.
