Art Deco table psyche, make-up and shaving mirror in solid oak with drawer, circa 1920 Solid oak, table psyche, also make-up and shaving mirror, early Art Deco, circa 1920, clearly and architecturally structured construction, rectangular base with one drawer with turned knob as the base for two supports holding the tilting mirror, turned knobs at the sides, mirror frame with stepped cresting and two dark square appliqués, straight-lined formal language, the grain of the oak used as a design element, good condition commensurate with age, 56x36x24 cm (HxWxD) The term psyche for a swivelling mirror goes back to the novel "Les Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon" by Jean de La Fontaine and originally referred to the large standing mirror; a ladies' conversation lexicon of 1838 likewise names the standing mirror in the dressing room. In the smaller table psyche with base, the drawers served to store smaller make-up utensils. Mirrors of this kind belonged to gentlemen's and ladies' dressing rooms and reflect the taste of the 1920s. The straight-lined design stands for the shift from Art Nouveau to a more sober and functional formal language after 1910, as represented in Germany by the Reform style and early Art Deco. Bei der kleineren Tischpsyche mit Unterbau dienten die Schubladen der Aufbewahrung kleinerer Schminkutensilien. Spiegel dieser Art gehörten zur Herren- und Damengarderobe und zeigen den Geschmack der 1920er Jahre. Die geradlinige Gestaltung steht für den Wandel vom Jugendstil zu einer sachlicheren und funktionaleren Formensprache nach 1910, wie sie Reformstil und frühes Art déco in Deutschland vertraten.
