Albrecht Dürer (1471 - Nuremberg - 1528), Salome Receiving the Head of Saint John. Woodcut on laid paper. (1511). 19.5 x 13 cm (sheet). Bartsch 126; Meder 232; Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 153 e (of g). Provenance: Unidentified collector’s mark (not in Lugt). A good, even Meder e impression, with a narrow fillet of blank paper outside the borderline. Salome enters the banqueting hall of Herod and Herodias, presenting the dish bearing the head of Saint John the Baptist. Weary and troubled, Herod gazes at the face of the dead Saint. His command has been carried out, and he now appears fully confronted with the consequences of his deed. – Areas of paper loss and surface abrasion in the margins skilfully repaired and retouched. A few small repaired tears. The borderline partially reinforced in ink. Overall in good condition. Taxation: differenzbesteuert (VAT: Margin Scheme).
