Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606 Leiden - Amsterdam 1669), Young Man in a Velvet Cap (Petrus Sylvius?) . Etching on laid paper. (1637). 11 x 9.4 cm (sheet). Bartsch 268; White/Boon 268 II (of II); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 164 II (of II). Provenance: Joseph Daniel Böhm (1794–1865), Vienna, with his handwritten collector’s mark verso (cf. Lugt 272); D. G. de Arozarena (active after 1860), South America and Paris, with his collector’s stamp verso (Lugt 109). An exceptionally fine, early and richly inked impression of New Hollstein’s second and final state, printing with remarkable clarity and strong contrasts, with touches of burr on the left eye, hair, lips and chin. The faint, wavy horizontal line immediately to the left of the face is still clearly visible. Printing with subtle plate tone. With small margins. – The upper and lower left corner tips skilfully made up. Two short repaired tears at the upper left edge. Otherwise in good condition. Taxation: regelbesteuert (VAT: Regular Taxation).
