Erste Ausgabe. - Johann Bollandus hatte 1643 begonnen, die Biographien aller Heiligen actenmäßig, historisch und kritisch geprüft zu veröffentlichen, fortgeführt von zahlreichen Mitarbeitern, die ihm zu Ehre "Bollandisten genannt" wurden. - Vgl. ADB 3, S. 109 - Das gigantische Projekt, alle historischen Lebensgeschichten von christlichen Heiligen wissenschaftlich-kritisch aufzuarbeiten, stieß auf heftigen Widerstand bei anderen Orden (insbesondere den Karmeliten und Dominikanern). Diese sahen traditionelle Legenden durch die Quellenkritik der Jesuiten bedroht. Vorliegender Band sammelt alle Verteidigungsschriften (Apologien) der Bollandisten. They viewed traditional legends as threatened by the Jesuits' source criticism. This volume collects all the defensive treatises (apologies) written by the Bollandists.
