Bound in half-leather with gilt lettering and title, leather corners with gilt decoration and three-sided gilt edges (slightly stained and scuffed, scrapes on the leather have been blackened). - First issue of the "Second Series," the rare deluxe edition featuring hand-colored, magnificent lithographic plates throughout. - The "Second Series" documents the dramatic finale of the war. It contains gripping depictions such as the devastating assault on the Malakoff Tower ("Attack on the Malakoff"), the fall of Sevastopol, the lives of soldiers during the harsh winter, as well as landscapes and fortifications of the peninsula. This deluxe edition was elaborately and meticulously hand-colored with watercolors by the publisher.
